It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of John David Mattocks, Sr., affectionately known as "Poogie," who departed from this world on June 8, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born on April 15, 1939, in Merritt, North Carolina, and passed away peacefully in
Virginia Beach, Virginia.
John's life was marked by dedication and service. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for over 20 years, a testament to his unwavering commitment and patriotism. Following his honorable retirement, John continued to pursue knowledge and education, earning two degrees from Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University. His career as a contracted Systems Analyst for the United States Government allowed him to continue serving his nation in a new capacity.
A man of boundless curiosity and intellect, John never stopped learning. He delighted in reading and took a keen interest in mastering Latin while keeping abreast of the ever-evolving field of computer science. His passions also extended to the silver screen; he treasured watching Westerns and classic black-and-white films.
An avid baseball fan, John was known for his remarkable speed and accuracy even later in life. He often amazed onlookers at the batting cages, demonstrating skills that defied his years. To his family, John was larger than life yet cherished life's simple pleasures, embodying a blend of strength and humility.
His family plans to honor his legacy by establishing a memorial in his name to support Little League International. In this spirit, we kindly invite you to contribute to this cause that was close to John's heart, ensuring that his love for baseball and community continues to thrive.
John is preceded in death by his beloved parents and siblings. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his surviving family: his devoted wife Miriam; their children Latasha Ward (Jean), Tamara Mattocks, and John, Jr. Mattocks (Alta); his brother Walter Mattocks (Lois); and his grandchildren Anthony Jolly, Jasmine Sutton(Jamel), Michael Jolly(Erykah), India Brown, Joshua Hicks, and Brooke Hicks. John's legacy continues through his great-grandchildren Malakai and Makoa del Castillo. He also leaves behind many treasured family members and friends.
At this time, funeral arrangements are still being made. The family wishes to lay his ashes to rest in a private family plot in North Carolina, honoring his profound connection to his roots.
