John Leslie McCabe, commonly referred to as John L., passed away peacefully at his home in Amite County, MS on February 27th, 2025. John L., 90, was born on December 7, 1934, in Amite County, MS, to the late John D. McCabe and Irene Shurley McCabe. He was a life-long resident of Amite County and a long-time farmer who raised beef cattle and timber. John L. was the proud owner of EverGreen in Liberty, MS.- a transportation company he founded in 1990, which he and his son, Patrick, operated for 35 years. Even after his retirement from EverGreen in 2008, John L. made weekly visits to the office to drink coffee with the crew and catch up with Patrick on the latest business news.
John L. was one of the original founders of Amite School Center in 1969. He also served on the Board of Directors for Magnolia Electric Power Association and the Amite County Co-Op until his death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Lottie Mae McCabe; a daughter, Vickie Cruise (Don); a son, Patrick McCabe (Jill); grandchildren, Cage Cruise (Lyndsey), Carson Cruise (Laura), and Kalin Roach (Toby); four great grandchildren; and sisters, Sonya Dunaway and Alah Clark. He was a lover of his family and his farm as well as an avid turkey, quail, and duck hunter. He leaves behind many friends, neighbors, and relatives who will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, at Mt Pleasant Baptist Church in Amite County from 12:30 PM until services at 2 PM officiated by Bro. Ellis Hollingsworth; followed by graveside services at Jacob Cemetery located at the intersection of Rollinson Road and Highway 567 north of Liberty.
Pallbearers will be Russell Schmidt, Cage Cruise, Carson Cruise, Toby Roach, Billy Jones, and Terry Wilkinson. Brown Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
