John Francis McDermott, 82, of Estero, Florida, passed away on November 15, 2024. John was born on January 29,1942 in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Bernard and Eleanor (Murphy) McDermott. He was an adoring husband to the love of his life, Marianne, for over 57 years; a devoted father to Bryan (Joyce) McDermott of White Plains, NY, and Lauren (Joe) Miller of Glen Ellyn, IL; cherished grandfather to his 5 grandchildren, Jack, Sean, and Kate Miller, and William and James McDermott; and uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was the loving brother of Neil (Loretta) McDermott. He is preceded in death by his older brother Bud (Sally Ann) McDermott and younger sister MaryAnn McNichol.
He graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School, Philadelphia, in 1959. Following high school, he served honorably in the United States Air Force for 4 years as a radar operator in Alaska and Thailand. He continued his education at LaSalle University, Philadelphia, earning a degree in accounting and finance.
John was employed by Thiokol Corporation in Philadelphia as manager of domestic taxes. In 1983, after the company was acquired by Morton International, John and Marianne began the next chapter of their life in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where he became manager of international taxes. John and Marianne returned briefly to Haddonfield, New Jersey, where he closed out his career as a tax consultant in Philadelphia after Morton was acquired by Rohm and Haas. John was a career-long member of the Tax Executives Institute.
John had many interests outside his career. He was a gifted amateur painter, often being asked by friends and family for a painting for their own home. He discovered his love of golf at The Village Links of Glen Ellyn and enjoyed playing at various courses around the country especially in Southwest Florida. A highlight of his life and dream come true was the opportunity to play at Augusta National Golf Club.
In 2003, John and Marianne became "snowbirds," spending their winter at Spring Run Golf Club in Estero, and eventually becoming full time residents of Florida. In retirement, John and Marianne enjoyed traveling, sharing a bottle of red wine, watching sunsets on the beach with a Sunday night pizza, weekly canasta games, and sharing the shores of Bonita Beach with friends and family. John shared many of his talents in Spring Run as president of Autumn Lake Community Association, board member of the Men's 18-Hole Golf Association, and helpful member of too many committees to count, assisting wherever he was needed. Everyone who knew John recognized him as a true gentleman.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Spring Run in 2025 and will be announced. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Spring Run Charitable Foundation, 9501 Spring Run Boulevard Estero, FL 34135, would be appreciated.
