John William McKay

FORT WORTH - John W. McKay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and music evangelist, went to be with Jesus on October 14, 2024 at the age of 90. Born in Turkey, Texas on February 27, 1934 to parents David Lee McKay and Fannie Collins McKay, John was only a year old when his father died and his mother took him to her parents, John and Dillie Collins who lovingly reared him along their own 10 children.
The family eventually moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where John met the love of his life, Julia Leslie, at Tech High School. They married on May 29, 1953 and recently celebrated 71 wonderful years together. In high school, John was a star football running back who received a football scholarship to TCU. But one year later, in response to God's call upon his heart to become a music minister and evangelist, he transferred to North Texas State University to study music.
For over 50 years, John served the Lord in churches, led city-wide and area-wide crusades with James Robison, Bailey Smith, and many other evangelists, and sang hundreds of concerts in churches all across the country. John also served as soloist and music director for the Southern Baptist Convention. God blessed him with a beautiful baritone voice, and he used it for the glory of God until he was well into his 70s.
John loved his family well and is survived by his loving wife, Julia, and their five children; daughter, Laurie and husband Bill; sons, Jay and his wife Karen, Scott and his wife Stephanie, Brian and his wife Marcia, and Cary and his wife Joy. He leaves behind 19 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren to carry on his legacy of love and faith.
A funeral service to honor John's life will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at Greenwood's Live Oak Chapel at 3100 White Settlement Road in Fort Worth, Texas. Burial to follow at Greenwood Memorial Park.
