John Joseph Morrissey, 85, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, in Ocala, Florida.
Born on July 11, 1940, in Providence, Rhode Island, John spent much of his life in Warwick, RI. He proudly served his country in the US Army and later dedicated many years to public service as a Warwick police officer and as a hardworking employee of Providence Gas. He was always a man of great determination, John often held two jobs to support those he loved.
A gifted storyteller, John delighted others with hilarious tales from his days as a police officer, and later as a constable - which, as he loved to say, was "far more dangerous!" He taught the younger generation how to shoot a gun, tell a great story, and enjoy life with laughter. Always seen with a wink and a cap, John was deeply proud of his Irish heritage and made several trips to Ireland to celebrate his roots.
After retirement, John settled in Dunnellon, Florida, where he was embraced by his community and adopted many of his neighbors as family. Known for his quick wit, big heart, and infectious laugh, John could light up any room. Even though John never had children of his own, he cherished his life partner Madeline's children, who lovingly called him Papa John; Deborah Young, Michael Costa, Brian Costa, Mark Costa.
He was the beloved papa to grandchildren Erica Marchand, James Marchand, Michael Jr. Costa and Nicholas Costa.
Great- Papa to Madilyn Costa and Kaedn Costa.
John had a close relationship with his nieces, Kathleen Coles, Carleen Munsen, Georgia Heath, Sandra Watson and the deceased Tricia Morrissey, nephews, Paul Morrissey Jr and James Connor Jr, and his many great nieces & nephews.
John had a deep devotion to his mother, Susan, whom he lovingly cared for after his father's passing. He was known for his love of a good drink, a good joke, and a good meal - often found sharing all three with friends and family at Dollywood or Stumpknockers.
John leaves behind the love of his life, Madeline Costa, his younger brother Paul M. Morrissey of Cranston, RI, and his younger sister Ann Connor of Rockledge, FL. Together, they carry on his legacy of Irish spirit - hard work, family gatherings, laughter and loyalty.
John is now reunited with his beloved parents, Susan Hogan Morrissey and John Joseph Morrissey, Sr., in eternal peace. His warmth, humor, and generosity will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The services will be private but the family asks those that loved him to please raise a drink and toast a life well lived and a man well loved.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in memory of John to any Veteran Charity.
