John Murphy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vander Plaat Memorial Home on Feb. 26, 2026.
John J. Murphy, 83, of Tenafly, formerly of Hackensack and River Edge, and originally from the Bronx, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 7, 2026. A dedicated father, grandfather, brother, and friend, he was also a proud veteran of the National Guard and a former parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church.
John was a best-selling author and a respected voice in the financial industry, influencing investors and market professionals for more than four decades. He was widely recognized for his expertise in technical analysis and his ability to make complex concepts accessible to a broad audience. His books, including Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets, remain standard references in the field. His insights led to appearances on national financial television, including a long-standing role on CNBC, and he worked closely with numerous professional organizations throughout his career. Though regarded as a trusted authority, he always considered himself first and foremost an educator.
Outside of his professional life, John found joy in reading, following sports, and spending time with family and friends. He spoke fondly of his childhood in the Bronx and remained a lifelong Brooklyn Dodgers fan.
He was the beloved father of Clare Murphy and her husband, Steven Wong, and Brian Murphy and his wife, Meng Murphy; and grandfather of Avery, Landon, and Isobel. He is also survived by his brother, James Murphy, as well as many nieces and nephews. His siblings, Mary Ellen Clogston, Margaret Haggerty, and Timothy Murphy, preceded him in death.
