John J. Nicholson, Sr., 83, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on November 8, 2025, at MUSC Northeast after a four year stay at PruittHealth in Ridgeway fighting dementia.
Born in Aiken, South Carolina, he lived most of his life in Columbia, SC. John graduated from Aiken County Public Schools and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Navy, including two years of active duty. Following his military service, John began a distinguished career with the National Security Agency (NSA), where he was trained by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). His work took him across the world, carrying out critical assignments with dedication and integrity.
After his retirement from government service, John continued his commitment to protection and service as a bodyguard for President Lyndon B. Johnson, later serving as a personal bodyguard to President Johnson's daughters, escorting them to and from school and events. In recognition of his service, John was presented with a presidential medallion by President Johnson at the White House - an honor that remains on display at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum.
John was best known for his kind heart and love for children. He always carried candy, toys, and treats to share, and was known for helping neighborhood kids - even offering them rides home from school when they needed a hand. His generosity and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gussie Belle Snelling Nicholson and John James Nicholson; his beloved wife, Carol Ann Nicholson; and his sons, John James Nicholson, Jr. and George Michael Nicholson.
John is survived by his brother, William Michael "Nick" Nicholson along with wife Katherine "KK" Nicholson; and his daughter-in-law, Ann Stockman-Nicholson; granddaughter, Renee Nicholson; great-granddaughter, Haylie Rushton.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, South Carolina.
