John "Jack" O'Brien, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of the late Patricia (DiVita) O'Brien for 33 wonderful years. Born August 19, 1935 in Winsted; the son of the late John A. and Mary (Ferry) O'Brien.
Jack worked for the State of Connecticut for many years as well as working with his longtime partner, the late Danny Kellogg owning and operating the 'Old Forge café in Winsted. Later, Jack and his wife, Pat owned and operated the Towne Tavern in Torrington.
Jack was a huge sports fan especially the Boston Red Sox. He loved visiting the ocean with his wife and family especially the Cape and Myrtle Beach. He was a kind, simple man and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his children, John "Jack" O'Brien of Norfolk, Kathy Bascetta and husband John of Norfolk and Michael O'Brien of Winsted; step children, Lori Beecher and husband Scott and Karen Chubbuck; grandchildren, Erica, John, Betsy, Kara, Christine, Jenna, Casey and Maria; niece, Paula Voight-Jause; several great grandchildren, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and extended family.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Betty Voight and daughter-in-law, Lucy LaMere.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 6, 2025 at St. Joseph Cemetery, Winsted with Military Honors at 11:45 AM.
A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the burial at the Bascetta home at 473 Greenwoods Road East in Norfolk. Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted has care of the arrangements. Visit an online guestbook at montano-shea.com.
