John Ostrander Obituary

John was born June 20, 1954, in Lapeer, to the late Dorance and Shirley (Deyoung) Ostrander. He honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Korea for much of his time in the service. On June 24, 1984, he married Janette Whelpley and together they shared 40 years of marriage. Janette preceded him in death in 2025. John retired from Star of the West in Frankenmuth, and he enjoyed being outdoors fishing, gardening, and traveling. He knew no stranger and liked meeting new people. One of his favorite pastimes was keeping up with politics, but nothing rivaled his love for spending time with family and friends. John will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
John is forever remembered by: Children: Ralph (Melissa) Nichols, Albert Nichols, Melissa (John Tadazak) Houghtaling, and Kathy (John) Sayles; Grandchildren: Bethany (Daniel) Reinert, Adrianna (Bryan) Walkley, Gage (Hailey) Houghtaling, Kirsten Sayles, Gabby (Joe) Kramp, and Bella Sayles; Great Grandchildren: Ava and Danielle Hallman; Siblings: Fay Young, Michael (Ann) Ostrander, Esther Willson, Duane Ostrander, Paula (Guy) Coleman, Christopher Ostrander, Wanda (Butch) Mockerman, Lenard (June) Williams; In-Laws: Bill (Sandy) Whelpley, David (Tina) Whelpley, Rick (Cindy) Whelpley, Dawn Whelpley, and Sue Broecker; Several nieces, nephews, extended family, and wonderful friends. John was preceded in death by: Wife, Janette Ostrander; Parents, Dorance and Shirley; Brothers: Thomas and Adrien Ostrander; Brothers-in-law: Sam Young and Warren Whelpley.

He was steadfast and giving, and a fantastic great grandfather to my daughters. He will be missed. My condolences to the whole family.
