John Walter Power, 89, passed away on January 17, 2023 in Southbury CT with his loving wife, Mary Dolores, by his side.
Born in Brooklyn on May 13, 1933. John was the devoted son of Walter and Margaret Power. He was also the loving brother of the late Bill (Stella) Betty (Bart), Charlie (Gerri), and Paul (Sister- in- law Kathleen, living in NJ).
John spent his childhood in Brooklyn's St. Teresa's Parish where he met his wife Mary Dolores as teenagers as well as countless other lifelong family and friends. Upon graduating from St. Francis Prep, John attended St. Francis College as well as NY Technical College where he was a star basketball player on all teams.
John was honorably discharged from the U. S. Air Force in 1955 where he served in Okinawa, Japan as an Air Traffic Controller.
After college, John spent many years in Manhattan as a Telephoto Engineer for United Press International. While at U. P. I., John was able to pursue his lifelong hobby of photography and had many of his photos syndicated over the national wires and newspapers throughout the years.
In his leisure time, John loved spending time with his wife Mary Dolores, kids and extended family and friends. John spent his days as a Dad going to his kids basketball games, coaching Brewster kids in basketball and baseball or going to Clancy's Beach where he spent many carefree summer days with his family and friends.
Devoted to his family, John was a loving husband to his wife of 66 years, Mary Dolores. He was also a devoted father to his sons John, Bob, (the late Hugh), Tom and Dan and his daughter Maureen. John was loved and admired by his daughters in law, Mary Power and Susan Power. Finally, John was the proud Grandfather (Pop) of 13 grandchildren: Erin Power, Moira O'Connell (Tommy O'Connell), Mike Power, Kate Mitchell (James Mitchell), Luke Power, Anthony Power (Katie Power), Joe Power, Lizzy Power, Tommy D. Power, Jack Power, Sean Power, Jessica Power and Ryan Power. John was also the proud Great Grandfather (Grand Pop) to Declan John O'Connell).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Monday January 23rd at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, 21 Prospect Street, Brewster New York https://stlawrenceotoole.org/.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Jude's Research Hospital https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html?sc_icid=home-btn-donate-now.

Farewell to a great friend and teammate. John had a calm manner and laid back sense of humor. He and Mary are among the nicest memories we have of St Teresa's . We will miss his quick smile and good nature. Rest in peace.
