John Schaer
Torrington- John A. Schaer, 80, passed away peacefully, Saturday, December 13, 2025, with his beloved wife, Evelyn, by his side.
Mr. Schaer was born in Oakland, CA, on September 27, 1945, son of the late Raymond and Jacqueline (Jones) Schaer, and had been a lifelong area resident. John was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam Era Veteran, and had been stationed in Thailand. Mr. Schaer was a skilled mechanic, operating John's Auto Service for many years, where many customers trusted his great work. In his spare time, he enjoyed cooking, fishing, collecting all sorts of things, woodworking, and was an avid gardener. John was a jack of all trades and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Evelyn (Desrosiers) Schaer, include a son, John A. Schaer, Jr., two grandchildren, Kenneth and Corey; two brothers, Raymond C. Schaer, Jr., and his wife, Cecile, and Louie Schaer; his adopted children, Anita, Cheryl, David, and Billy; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved brothers and sisters-in-law. Mr. Schaer was predeceased by a brother, Gene Schaer.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 22, 2025, at 11:00a.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington. Burial will be held in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to Vietnam Veterans of America ( vva.org/donate ).
