John Delange Selvig, aged 84, passed away on September 19, 2024, in Orange Grove, Texas. Born on August 20, 1940, John dedicated his life to his family, his work, and his passions.
John graduated from Ray High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1958 and furthered his education at the University of Corpus Christi, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1962. He served the community as a business manager and accountant for several decades. However, his favorite stories to tell were usually about his adventures growing up as a paper boy and the group of boys on that route who became lifelong friends.
John was known for his loyalty, wit, and strength. His home in Orange Grove feels like a park and bird sanctuary. John took pride in his vegetable garden, especially his tomato planters. Whether he was on his tractor, "mowing the road," or on his golf cart cleaning up litter on the roads nearby, John was always caring for the environment around him in some way.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Selvig; his children, Tracy (David) Bierstedt, Rebecca (Bill) Schuch, and John Selvig, Jr.; his granddaughter, Laura Bierstedt; and his sister, Charlotte (Tandy) Gonce. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mabyn Selvig.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Winstead Funeral Home in Mathis, Texas. John's life was a testament to his dedication and love for his family and community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
