John Paul Tomasek, Sr., a devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, and faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully at his family home on June 19, 2025, at the age of 77.
Born in Owosso, Michigan on January 4, 1948, John was the eldest of ten children born to the late John and Dorothy Tomasek. From an early age, he embraced the values of hard work, humility, and service-principles that guided his every step in life.
John was a proud graduate of Michigan State University, class of 1968, and went on to dedicate 43 years of loyal service to the GM Engine Plant in Flint. A member of UAW Local 659, he was deeply committed to the dignity of labor and the strength of community. His love of the land and animals was evident in his lifelong passion for farming and through his devoted involvement in the Shiawassee Jr. Livestock Association. For many years, he also served as Superintendent of the Sheep Livestock Barn at the Shiawassee County Fair, where he mentored countless young people and shared his knowledge and joy.
A man of deep faith, John was a proud and active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 12186, where he served faithfully as Council Recorder for 20 years. His Catholic faith was not only a private devotion but a lived testimony of compassion, generosity, and quiet strength.
On September 4, 1971, John married the love of his life, Shirley, with whom he built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring love. Together, they raised three children: Nicole (Tom) Zalucki, Amy (Scott) Cathcart, and the late John "JP" Paul Tomasek, Jr., whose memory John held close to his heart.
He was a cherished grandfather to Kelsey Tomasek, Dathan Tomasek, Madilynn Tomasek, Avery Cathcart, Ella Zalucki, Tyler Zalucki and Anthony Zalucki. His guidance, stories, and steadfast presence will remain in their hearts forever.
John is also survived by his beloved siblings: Marie, Evelyn, Ken, Rita, Robert, Lorraine, Vivian, William, and Edwin. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son John "JP" Jr., and his nephew Michael Tomasek.
Described by all who knew him as loving, kind, wise, and passionate, John gave generously of himself in every role he held-as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor. His quiet faith, enduring patience, and deep well of knowledge were gifts to all who had the privilege to know him. John's life was a testament to the values of faith, family, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Visitation will be held for John from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm with a rosary service at 7:00pm on Monday, June 23, 2025 at Watkins Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, 501 N. Saginaw St., Durand. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00am with visitation from 10:00-11:00am on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 9450 Duffield Rd, Gaines. John will be laid to rest at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery following mass. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life and legacy.

JOHN BRUNGER PhD

June 24, 2025

John was my dear friend in grammar school, and we spent many a day playing marbles together. We both attended Martin School, a one-room school in Venice Township, which housed grades from kindergarten through eighth grade. We were classmates until the fourth grade, when I transferred to St. Joseph's parochial school in Owosso. My deepest condolences go out to his family. A couple of years ago, I reached out to John; although I may have lost contact with him since then, he has always been remembered fondly. May God rest his soul. JMJ
