He is survived by his brothers, William (Sandra) and Edwin Tompkins, nephews Timothy, Eric (Michelle) and Christopher (Debra) Tompkins, nieces Teresa Fox and Tina(Douglas) Ames.
John was a graduate of Addison Central School. He received an Associates Degree in Horticulture from Alfred State College, an Associates Degree from Corning Community College, a Bachelors Degree from Mansfield University and a Masters Degree from Elmira College. He was an elementary school teacher for 30 years in the Elmira school district. After retirement he played trombone at several local ensembles. He was also an usher at the Clemens Center in Elmira. He enjoyed being in the church choir at North Presbyterian and later at Park Church.
John's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 17 at 11 AM at the Park Church in Elmira.
Those choosing to remember John can send donations to the Park Church in Elmira or the American Kidney Foundation.
