John "Mark" Topper, age 74, of Pampa, Texas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in Amarillo, surrounded by family. Mark was born on December 13, 1950, in Pampa to John and Betty Topper.
Mark graduated from Clarendon High School in 1969 and married Kathy McIntire in 1972. Together, they welcomed two daughters, Jennifer and Keeley. Later, in 1998, Mark married Shirlene Romines Bowles, with whom he shared many happy years. Mark was known for his gentle nature and quiet strength, preferring the solace of his beloved mancave, where friends and family knew they could always find him.
A talented welder by trade, Mark worked for National Oilwell Varco, Cabot, and operated his own business, Topper Welding, before transitioning to a career in gas inspection. He took great pride in his craftsmanship, creating keepsakes for nieces and nephews from welded horseshoes-treasured tokens of his love and skill.
Mark was a man of simplicity, kindness, and intuition, quick to form impressions and always generous in spirit. He cherished time spent fishing, hunting, and being with family. His presence was a steady comfort, and his love for those around him was unwavering.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Keeley Topper Downs; and his great nephew, Jake Tolbert.
Mark is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirlene Topper of Pampa; daughter, Jennifer Topper Read of Pampa; sons, Jason Bowles and Jarred Bowles of Pampa; brothers, Jeff Topper (Lana) of Clarendon, Keith Topper (Teresa); sister, Cindy Pohnert (Dudley) of White Deer; seven grandchildren-Bailey, Evan, Jessie, Ayden, Zoe, Hailey, Helena-and one great granddaughter, Goldie. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will deeply miss his warmth and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) West Texas Chapter, Attn: OOTD Walks, 199 Water Street 11th Floor, New York, NY 10038 in honor of his great nephew Jake Tolbert, or to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 71741 in memory of Mark.
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Winegeart Funeral Home's Serenity Chapel, officiated by Pastor Jamisen Hancock. Cremation care has been entrusted to Winegeart Funeral Home.
