John H. Warren, a retired St. Croix lawyer, husband of Joan Warren, father of Ryan Warren, and beloved friend of many, died in Florida on Sept. 20 at the age of 82 after a protracted battle with Parkinson's disease.
John was born Oct. 16, 1941, in Allegheny, New York. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Duke University, and his law degree with distinction from Cornell University, where he served on the law review and was recognized as a member of the Order of the Coif.
John's career trajectory was unique. Upon graduation from law school, he served as an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a time, then later as general counsel or independent director of a number of companies. He engaged in entrepreneurial endeavors throughout the world, including London, Hong Kong, South Korea and West Africa. More recently, John was an associate attorney in the St. Croix law firm of Hamm & Barry.
John had a deep and abiding love for St. Croix. He served on the Church Council of the Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church and was instrumental in opening up a Red Cross shelter after Hurricane Hugo. He moved his family from his beloved St. Croix after losing their home to Hurricane Maria in 2017, settling in North Port, Fla.
Those who knew John will remember him as a free spirit and delightful raconteur with a Will Rogers-caliber wit. He was a kind and caring friend to many. He showed compassion to those in need. He enjoyed fatherhood late in life, raising his son, Ryan, with love and pure joy.
John "lived well, laughed often and loved much." He "gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children." He "filled his niche and accomplished his task." John "left the world better than he found it."
He is survived by his wife, Joan Warren, affectionately known as "Joanie," who steadfastly remained by John's side throughout his ordeal with Parkinson's, and son, Ryan. He is also survived by his sister, Mardie Butler and her husband, Perry; his father-in-law, two brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law, three nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service will be held at a time and place to be later announced.
