John Weeks Obituary

John R.M. "Michael" Weeks Sr., age 81, passed away peacefully on January 12th, 2026 at his Virginia Beach home with family and caregivers by his side. Mike was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and operated a successful State Farm Insurance agency in Virginia Beach for decades. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marcelle Weeks of Virginia Beach.

Mike and his wife, Lou Grey Weeks, had just celebrated their 60th anniversary in November. In Michael's final years, Lou Grey, along with a team of dedicated caregivers, helped him fight the onslaught of Parkinson's disease with resolve and devotion.

He was born on November 11th, 1944, in London, England, in the midst of a German bombing attack. On the night of his birth, a bomb landed only three blocks away from the hospital. Ironically, his family had moved there from Cairo a few months prior to escape the Nazi occupation of Egypt. He lived in England through the War until age 4 before emigrating to Scarsdale, NY, and had lived in Virginia Beach since 1961.

After graduating from old Virginia Beach High School, Michael earned his bachelor's degree in art history from Old Dominion University and served in the National Guard from 1964 to 1968, then found employment as a claims adjustor for State Farm in 1969. Two years later in 1971, he became a State Farm Insurance agent and operated a successful agency in Virginia Beach for 52 years. His son, John, joined the family business and helped him manage the agency for 23 years before his retirement. Michael earned multiple awards and designations over his many years in the insurance industry.

Mike and Lou Grey were familiar faces at the 77th Street Virginia Beach volleyball net for decades. Mike would sometimes leave work early to play ball and enjoy the sunshine; he was a true "beach bum" when he took off his tie and blazer. Over many years, he also loved to travel frequently with Lou Grey, often to Club Med in the Caribbean between trips to Europe and the Western United States.

We remember Mike as a humorous, laid-back, warm, and empathetic man with a strong work ethic and devotion to his family. He was a bon vivant and loved a good cigar and glass of cognac. "Tradewinds of the islands" coursed through his veins to the tempo of steel drums and the sand beneath his feet was where he tread most comfortably.

Over the past few years, Mike has been fortunate to have had a fantastic team of caregivers providing around-the-clock care for him as he battled his illness. Lou Grey was a driving force and helped orchestrate his care journey with unmatched dedication and resolve.

Mike is survived by his wife, Louise T. Weeks, as well as daughter Holly Buckley and her husband Brian Cross of Virginia Beach and son and daughter-in-law John and Valerie Weeks of Norfolk, VA, along with grandchildren Mylo, Claire, Henry and Jillian. Also surviving him are his brother and sister-in-law, George and Beth Weeks, niece Angela Lindsey and her husband Michael Lindsey of Virginia Beach, nephew Eric Weeks of Wilmington, NC, and brother-in-law Marvin and wife Susan Thews of Nashville, TN.

A casual celebration of life will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Maestas Chapel in Virginia Beach on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Parkinson's Foundation by clicking the link , and online condolences may be left online at www.altmeyerfh.com.
