John Andrew Whelan

John (Johnny) Andrew Whelan, age 94, passed away on the evening of November 14th at 4:20 pm.
He was born October 7th, 1931. Raised in Revere, Massachusetts, by Mary and Augustus Whelan.
Johnny attended college in Boston receiving his master's degree in teaching. He went on to be a dedicated teacher throughout life, spending much of it in California teaching elementary school. He was the creator of Blanche Reynolds Elementary School's first open classroom. It brought him great joy to know he would be helping students far into the future.
After years of teaching, he chose to retire and join the Peace Corp before moving to the Washington Coast, becoming a beloved piano player at the Galway Bay Irish pub.
He spent the last 10 years of his life back in Ventura, to be closer with his family. Johnny spent his time thrift store shopping, singing along as he played the piano, and writing letters to the editor.
He is survived by his two daughters, Heidi Whelan and Lisa Anderson, and his three grandchildren, Naki, Finn, and Duffy.
