Johnnie M Eagan, affectionately known as John to his friends and Jack to his family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on May 11, 2025.
One of five children born to John M Eagan and Genevieve Reinhardt, he was born on May 21, 1945 in Middletown, New York. He was a lifelong resident of the town he loved and served with unwavering dedication.John was a proud graduate of Port Jervis High School's class of 1965. His commitment to his community was evident through his work as Assistant Supervisor for the Orange County NY Department of Public Works. His leadership extended beyond his professional role as he served as the past Chief of Rutgers Engine Company 22 in Johnson, NY. His passion for service was matched by his involvement in local organizations, including the Middletown Elk's Lodge 1097 and the Minisink Valley Kiwanis.
He was revered for his masterful coordination of chicken barbecues and pancake breakfasts, which not only brought the community together but also supported various local organizations. John's meticulous attention to detail ensured that every event he was a part of, especially at the Elk's Lodge, was a resounding success. His thoroughness in cleaning and maintaining the lodge's facilities was a testament to his exceptional work ethic. John was a man who led by example, inspiring others with his selflessness and generosity.Beyond his public works and community service, John's family was the cornerstone of his life.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Doreen A Smith and her husband Robert L Smith of Shippensburg, PA; his brother William R Eagan and wife Connie of Port Jervis, NY; his sisters Dorothea Waechter and husband Fred of Selma, NC, and Nancy Dederick of High Point, NC. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren Robert, Derek, Ashley, and Heather, and his adored great-grandchildren Evan, Arthur, Christopher, Iyla, Everly, and Kadence. He was preceded in death by his grandson Matthew S Eagan and his sister Barbara Dombal.John's life was a living embodiment of the famous words by Winston Churchill, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." His giving nature was apparent in every aspect of his life, from his thoughtful guidance to his readiness to lend a hand whenever needed. The words generous, thoughtful, and selfless are not merely descriptors but the principles by which he lived daily.John will be remembered not only for his significant contributions to his community but also for the warmth and kindness he extended to everyone he met. His absence will be deeply felt by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A service will be held at the Middletown Elks Lodge #1097 at 11 am on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Cremation will be private.
