Joseph Mazza Obituary

Joseph John Mazza Sr., a beacon of light and love to all who knew him, departed this world on August 23, 2025, in Middletown, New York. Born on October 8, 1977, in Brooklyn, New York, Joseph lived a life marked by dedication, service, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.

Joseph's journey began as the cherished son of Helen Huffer Mazza and Thomas F. Mazza Sr. Growing up, he learned the values of hard work and community spirit. He carried these lessons with him throughout his life, shaping the man he would become. After graduating from Middletown High School, Joseph quickly became known for his tireless work ethic, serving as a Senior Grounds man at SUNY Orange. His love for his hometown was evident in his service as Commissioner and Past Chief of the Pocatello Fire Department, where he led with courage and compassion.

Joseph's passion for helping others didn't stop there; he was also a dedicated firefighter, a Hazmat tech with the Orange County Hazardous Materials/WMD Response Team and Emergency Services. His bravery and expertise helped safeguard the community he so deeply loved.

At home, Joseph was a loving husband to his wife, Kristina Porter, and a devoted father to his children, Krislyn, Joseph Jr., and Khloe. His family was his heart, his pride, and his joy. He was a loving brother to his sister Margaret Ann Lauricella and Dawn Marie Gregan, and he held a special place in his heart for his late brother, Thomas F. Mazza Jr. Joseph's nieces and nephews, Richard, Ava, Payton, Thomas, Lilyanna, and Jaxon, all knew him as the fun-loving "umple" who could light up any room.

His interests were as diverse as his talents. Whether he was spending precious moments with family and friends, helping his community, fishing, playing Pokémon GO, or stopping at Stewart's for a cup of coffee, Joseph embraced life with joy.

As a motivational force, Joseph inspired those around him to live fully and love deeply. "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others," a powerful quote by Mahatma Gandhi. Joseph embodied this sentiment, always placing the needs of others above his own. His legacy is not merely in the acts of service he performed but in the countless lives he touched and the community he helped build and strengthen.

Today, as we reflect on the life of Joseph John Mazza Sr., let us honor his memory by living out the values he held dear. Let us strive to serve with the same selflessness, to love with the same depth, and to make our world a better place, just as he did. Joseph's life was a testament to the fact that one person can indeed make a difference, and in his memory, we are all called to continue that noble pursuit.

Joseph's story is not one of an end but a continuing narrative of hope, courage, and love that will forever be written in the hearts of those he leaves behind. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, let us carry forward the light of his spirit, for in doing so, Joseph John Mazza Sr. will live on, guiding us towards a future as bright as the legacy he leaves.

A Visitation will be held at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middletown, NY on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St Joseph Cemetery, Middletown NY.
