Jose Manuel Ruiz, known affectionately by friends and family as Joe, passed away due to heart failure on May 21, 2025, at the age of 72, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on April 19, 1953, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, to the late Silvia and Jose Ruiz, Joe was a cherished sibling to his brothers Willie and Roberto Ruiz, both of whom preceded him in death.
Joe's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family and his service to the community. As a distinguished Security Forces K9 handler, Joe not only protected those around him but also formed an unbreakable bond with his canine partners. His commitment to safety and security was paralleled only by his love and devotion to his family.
He is survived by his sisters Sonia, Agnes, Nancy, Madeline and his adoring children: Melissa, Michael, Mark, Michelle, and Matthew Ruiz, who will forever remember him as a guiding light in their lives. Joe was also a doting grandfather to twelve grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy and laughter to his world. In addition to his role as a family man, Joe was the beloved adventure partner to his girlfriend, Ester, with whom he shared many of life's most beautiful moments.
Throughout his life, Joe's interests reflected his zest for life and love of family. He was an avid bowler, a sport that he enjoyed both for the competition and the camaraderie. Joe and Ester's shared passion for travel led them on numerous cruises, creating memories that spanned the globe and the seven seas. However, nothing compared to the time he spent loving on his grandkids, where every moment was cherished and every hug was a testament to his deep affection.
As we reflect on Joe's life, we are reminded of the words of the poet Rumi, "Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation." Joe's legacy is one that will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his presence will be felt in every wave that laps against the cruise ship, every strike at the bowling alley, and every smile from his grandchildren.
Joe's life was a journey of love, service, and joy. His memory will be treasured and kept alive through the stories shared, the values he instilled, and the love he spread. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit continues to guide and inspire.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Joe Manuel Ruiz, you have left an indelible mark on this world, and you will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing you. Rest in peace, dear Joe.
