Joseph Binni Obituary

Joseph E. Binni, 102, of Powhatan Point, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, at Liza's Place in Wheeling, West Virginia. Born on January 15, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Louis and Mary (D'Amico) Binni, he led a long and fulfilling life, marked by dedicated service to his community and country.
Joseph devoted much of his life to public service in the Village of Powhatan Point, where he served two terms as mayor, two terms as a councilman, and one term as treasurer. His commitment to the community was further demonstrated through his employment at the Powhatan Mining Company, which later became the North American Coal Corporation. Over 23 years, from 1941 to 1964, Joseph was an integral part of the Union and was actively involved as a local officer in the United Mine Workers of America, Local 5497.
A devout Roman Catholic, Joseph was a member of the former St. John Vianney Church of Powhatan Point. He was deeply committed to his faith and the Knights of Columbus, being a lifetime Honorary Third Degree Knight with Bellaire, Ohio Council 1246, and a lifetime Honorary member of the Jack Barry Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Additionally, he was a respected Member of the Sons of Italy Bellaire, Ohio Lodge 754.
A proud veteran of World War II, Joseph served with distinction in the 264th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theater of Operations alongside the First, Third, and Ninth armies. He was honored to be a recipient of the French Legion of Honor for his bravery and contributions during the war. His military service extended beyond the battlefield as he remained an active member of several veterans' organizations, including the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge (VBOB), American Legion Post 228 of Powhatan Point, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5565 and National Post 15036. He also served as Postmaster for the Village of Powhatan from 1964 until 1983 where he was well-regarded by his community. It was evident through his work, where he diligently served with integrity and reliability.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Violet "Luba" (Vucelich) Binni; son, Raymond Binni; grandson, Christopher Scott Binni; three sisters, Edeline (Edward) Kohler, Rose (Aloysius) Staud, Delores (Carlos) Houghton; three brothers, Armand, Ermelind, and Raymond Binni III.
He is survived by his sons, Joseph (Patricia) Binni, Edward (Alicia) Binni, Christopher (Krista) Binni; grandchildren, Chad, Dana (Jim), Jeremy (Jonie), Brennan, Taylor, Renni (Danny); 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and beloved cat, Rudy.
Family and friends are to be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home 186 Main Street, Powhatan Point, on Tuesday, July 22, from 2:00pm-5:00pm and 7:00pm until time of wake by the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Jack Barry Assembly at 8:45pm. Additional visitation on Wednesday, July 23, at the Funeral Home from 10:00am until a brief service at 11:00am. Funeral Mass to follow at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Shadyside, Ohio with Father Dan Heusel as officiant. Burial at Powhatan Cemetery where full military honors will be given by the Powhatan Honor Guard.
