Joseph L. Cerny passed away on November 9, 2025, after an extended battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born on May 27, 1950, in Elmira, NY and was the eldest son of William and Florence Cerny.
The family relocated to Ballston Spa in 1963. Joe was a 1969 graduate of Ballston Spa High School and a 1971 graduate of Albany Business College. He was an avid fan of the sports world, whether it was nascar racing, horse racing, hockey or basketball he was always keeping an eye on the sports section daily to make sure he didn't miss either the latest trade or any local athlete making good. Participating in several high school and college teams, he was especially proud of being a member of the Division III National Championship Basketball team at Albany Business College in 1971. Always kind spirited, laughing and enjoying the friendships he made along the way.
After graduating from college with a degree in Hotel Management he pursued his dream to move to West Palm Beach Florida where he resided for over 25 years. Joe settled in and started his own business adventure in the irrigation field for the majority of that time. He loved the many comforts and recreational activities of South Florida living. Everything from nascar racing, spring training baseball, fishing, camping and water skiing among other things in his active lifestyle.
Joe finally decided to come home to his roots of family after tiring of the heat of South Florida. Upon returning to the four seasons and the environment of his hometown he let it be known there is no place like home, He picked up in his zest for life right where he left off upon returning, enjoying such things as renewing old friendships and building new ones. He never really shied away from offering a toast and wishing you the best.
Joe was a diligent and dedicated worker, no matter what he was asked to do. Receiving many accolades for his willingness to get the job done above all expectations. While always maintaining a great work ethic he also enjoyed his free time as well. Some of his many hobbies included watching a classic movie, building beautiful birdhouses, barbecuing like a master chef and attending concerts, Always looking for a good bargain at garage sales to hiking and camping, he loved the outdoors. He also loved the horses of Saratoga and followed them for many years getting to know the many fans and rooting on his favorites such as D. Wayne Lucas and Pat Day.
As he slowed down in his later years Joe showed that special love for his family. He had a strong bond with his siblings and was always looking out for them like a big brother. After losing his Dad he had the respect for his Mom that only a Mother could appreciate. They counted on each other for the final 10 years of their lives only to pass away within a short time of each other and deep down knowing they would meet again. As Joe would always say, "Catch you later!"
Joe was predeceased by his parents and his sister Mona Speranza. He is survived by his siblings Steve (Sherri) Cerny, Michael (Tammy) Cerny, Eric (Mary) Cerny and Lisa McDonough along with many nieces and nephews.
