Joseph M. Cingle, 86, of Clarence, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 2, 2025. Born on August 30, 1938, in Clarence, he was the son of the late Anna (Cingle) Davis. On October 19, 1963, he married the love of his life, Sophie Marie Schall, in Clarence. Sophie survives at home.
Joe was a 1958 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School. Following graduation, he proudly served in the United States Army for six and a half years, including six months during the Berlin Crisis.
Throughout his life, Joe was a dedicated and hardworking man. His career included work in natural gas pipelining, the construction of I-80, Basalla Family Homes, and Cingle's Machine Shop. He also served as a USPS letter carrier. In 1964, he began working at the Lock Haven Piper Aircraft Facility and later transferred to the Quehanna Division, where he served as Leadman until its closure in 1984.
Joe gave back to his community as an elected Snow Shoe Township Supervisor and later as Roadmaster. He took great pride in helping to plan and complete the township's first official office and equipment facility-now the current Township Building-which was fully paid off at its completion. His dedication was especially evident during the Blizzard of 1993, when he worked through the night to keep roads open and later led a team to clear the area for safe travel.
A man of deep faith, Joe was a lifelong member of Queen of Archangels Parish Church in Clarence, where he also served as a past Liturgical Minister. He was a 3rd Degree life member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Clarence American Legion Post 813. Joe also coached his sons' little league teams and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pirates, and Notre Dame football.
Joe was known for his friendly, kind, and generous nature. He never met a stranger and loved chatting with anyone he encountered. In his younger years, he enjoyed scenic drives, view wildlife, and playing horseshoes at Scott's cabin. In more recent years, as his illness progressed, he found joy sitting by the window watching birds-often sharing the spot with Bailey and Luka, who insisted on taking turns on his lap.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Sophie; two sons: Scott Cingle and his wife, Monie, of Clarence, and Shawn Cingle of Maryland; three grandchildren: Joshua Cingle and his wife, Beth, Caden Cingle, and Cyrus Cingle; and two great-grandchildren: Devin and Hailey Miller. He also leaves behind his devoted dog and companion, Luka.
In addition to his mother, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Margie Jozefik; two brothers, John Davis and Michael Davis; and his cherished dog, Bailey.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Queen of Archangels Parish Church in Clarence, with Father Michael Wolfe officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion/Snow Shoe VFW Honor Guard, c/o Clarence American Legion Post 813, 1171 Clarence Rd, Clarence, PA 16829, or to Centre County PAWS, 1401 Trout Rd, State College, PA 16801.
