J. Arthur Coffill, 75, died on June 7, 2024, at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Nona R.(Hagenbuch Cournean) Coffill.
Art was born in Torrington on January 30, 1949, a son of the late Edith Baldi Coffill and Wilbur A. Coffill. He lived in Litchfield from childhood until 1991 when he married the love of his life, his beautiful wife Nona and moved to Falls Village. In 2016 he and Nona moved back to his beloved Litchfield after finding their Dream House. In 2012 he retired as a Vice President and Mortgage Officer with The National Iron Bank in Salisbury, CT. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1967. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He also was a graduate of The New England School of Banking at Williams College as well as many Banking related courses through out his career. He was a past member of the Board of Governors of The Waterbury Chapter of the American Institute of Banking also serving on the Education Committee, he also served on the Litchfield Ambulance Service, a member of the Board of Directors of The Litchfield Chapter of the American Red Cross, St. Anthony's Parish Council, St. Anthony's Parish Finance Council, St. Anthony's Choir, past member of the Board of the Bantam Lake Authority and The Litchfield Republican Town Committee. In 1995 Art was a Co-Chairman of the Host Town Program for Special Olympics (along with his good friend Evan Williams) in Litchfield. Mr. Coffill was also a member of The Litchfield Lions Club & The Washington CT Lions Club, The Washington CT Ambulance Association and he was a Charter member of the Washington CT Jaycees. He was a Lector at St. Anthony's Church in Litchfield since 1965 and St. Joseph's Church in N. Canaan; he has held several offices in the Knights of Columbus: At St. Anthony's Council #56 in Litchfield he has been a Trustee, Advocate, Recorder and Grand Knight. In the 4th Degree Fr. Duggan Assembly in Torrington he was a Faithful Navigator, Faithful Admiral, Faithful Pilot, Faithful Sentinal & Trustee. He also was a District Deputy in District #18 covering N. Canaan, Goshen, Winsted, Torrington, Washington, New Hartford, Bethlehem and Litchfield. He also served on several State Council Knights of Columbus Staff Assignments. He was Co-Chairman of the St. Anthony's Council Knights of Columbus #56 Scholarship Golf Tournament since 2000. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce, Falls Village Republican Town Committee and the Board of Directors for the United Way of Northwestern Connecticut. He was a member of the Silver Belles & Beaux Senior Singing Group of Torrington. In 2020 he was awarded the St. Joseph's Medal from the Archdiocese of Hartford. He especially enjoyed volunteering at the Litchfield Information Booth on the Litchfield Green.
Besides his wife Nona, Art leaves a brother, Albert Coffill & his wife Teresa of Litchfield; a stepson, Kenneth Cournean & his wife Elaine of Canton and a stepdaughter, Kathleen R. Hall of Falls Village. Seven grandchildren, Jessica (Joey), Justin, Joshua, Jillian (Ryan) & Jacklyn Hall and Nathan & Cecilia Cournean. Also four great grand children. A niece, Laura Coffill & husband (Chris Morra) of Branford & nephew Brian Coffill (Caroline) of
Richmond, Virginia. He also leaves a great niece, Jane Coffill and a great nephew, Robert Coffill, both of Richmond, VA. He was predeceased by his parents: Wilbur & Edith(Baldi) Coffill and his sister Roberta Coffill Healy.
Arrangements: Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday June 21st at Thurston-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road in Litchfield. Memorial Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 49 South Street in Litchfield on Saturday, June 22 at 11:00 a.m. There will be a "Celebration of Life" following Mass in the church hall.
