Joseph Alvin Crews, 82, passed away on November 1, 2023 at his home in Hollandtown, FL. He graduated from Allentown High School in 1958. In 1959, he joined the US Army, serving three years with a tour of duty in Germany.
Joe's career included working for the USDA in Central Florida in Animal Plant Inspection Service. He joined the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service, USDA which covered St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties.
Joe earned an AA degree from Indian River Community College. After taking a leave of absence from the USDA, he earned a degree in Agriculture Economics from the University of Florida in 1974.
Joe returned to work for ASCS/USDA as Director for Orange, Osceola, and Brevard counties. He then transferred to director for ASCS/USDA in Escambia County, Florida. He lived as close to his roots in Santa Rosa County as possible while working and making a life for his family. He was appointed to the Pensacola Junior College Board of Trustees for which he served with honor.
Being called to the farm life he loved so well in Hollandtown, Joe resigned from ASCS/USDA to become a full time farmer on the land of his Holland ancestors. In intervening years, he was hired as manager of Session's Peanut Buying Point in Allentown.
Joe was married to Doris Hatfield (mother of his sons) from 1967 until her death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin I. and Annie Ruth Holland Crews and two older sisters, Margaret Crews McDonald and Opel Crews Kurbes.
Survivors include: his wife, Voncile Dooley Crews (whom he married in 1991); son, Matt Crews (Jennifer, step granddaughter, Jessica Whitfield along with step great-granddaughters, Claire and Olivia); son, Dan Crews; stepson, Mark Dooley (Sonya Ann and beloved step grandson, Chase); stepson, Mike Dooley; three brothers: Glynn (Jerry), Lamar (Earline) and Phillip Crews; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins; along with numerous Crews and Holland family members of the Hollandtown Community.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the memorial service begins at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Trahan Family Funeral Home, Milton Chapel.
Joe will be remembered with love and kindness. He will be missed by all who knew him.
