Joseph P. (JP) Cuda, 97, of Corning, N.Y. passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loving family members on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
JP was born on November 11, 1926, in Corning, the son of the late Fedele and Maria Merola Cuda. He graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School and Corning Free Academy. He was a member of All Saints Parish and a proud World War II Army Veteran, serving from 1945-1946.
JP was the proprietor of Cuda's Mini Market and Fresh Catch for many years, retiring in 1990, to then enjoy travelling to Italy, California and Las Vegas. He was also the owner of Cuda's Mini Air Ads with his nephew, Joe Costa. Together they assembled and flew celebratory and political signs overhead in Corning and throughout New York and Pennsylvania. He was a proud owner of five airplanes; an Aeronca Chief II-CC, a Cessna 170-B, a Cessna 120, an Army Trainer 1941 Ryan PT-22 and a Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer, which he flew all to Fly-In Breakfasts, Air Shows and other events. He enjoyed giving rides to his family and friends whenever possible. He also enjoyed going with them to the horse track and area casinos to play his favorite games of chance. What he loved most of all was gathering with our family near and far to celebrate or just share a meal and entertain us with his amazing life stories and proud Italian Heritage.
He is survived by children: Ann Cuda McMurray of Corning, Carmine Cuda of Springfield, Va., Cathy Denissoff of Norton, OH, JoAnne Cuda of Norton, OH and Jeanie Cuda (Deb Mansfield) of Bath, OH. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and close friends Frank Sorge, Tony Speciale and Robert Pierri.
In addition to his parents, JP was preceded in death by his spouse Rita Fortino Cuda, sons Phil and Steve Cuda, great-granddaughter Aliciana Jones, sisters Catherine Costa, Della Daniels, Rose Carozzoni, Fran Cuda and brother Sam Cuda.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 2:00-5:00 pm at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 10:00 am at All Saints Parish, 155 State St., Corning with Father Patrick Connor officiating. Committal prayers will immediately follow in the family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in JP's name may be made to The Bath VA Hospital and CareFirst. The family would like to thank both organizations, as well as his longtime nurse Erika Rossetti, for their loving support and care of our father.
Special thanks to our sister Annie, who has lovingly cared for our father for the past 12 years.
