Joseph Lee Daw, MD, age 87, passed away on July 24, 2025 in Naperville, IL.
He was born November 5, 1937 in Aurora, IL, the son of Hobart J. and Hazel (Bickert) Daw. He was united in marriage to Joan Yvonne Dano on August 1, 1959 at the House of God in Mooseheart, IL.
Joseph graduated with the 1955 class of East Aurora High School and the University of Illinois in 1959 and Medical School in 1962. After his internship, he was commissioned as Captain in the US Air Force, serving as Flight Surgeon at Ramstein Air Base, Germany from 1963 to 1966, the last year as Chief of the Flight Surgeon's Office. He participated in the Gemini Program (early orbital space flights) with emergency recovery teams in Kano, Nigeria and the Ascension Island in 1966, and assignments in France, Italy, Libya, and Turkey. In August 1966, he began private medical practice with the Oswego Medical Group which joined with Dreyer Medical Clinic in 1984, and he retired in July 2001. He was on the Senior Staff at Provena Mercy in Aurora and served as Chairman of the Department of Family Practice, and as President of the Medical Staff from 1982 to 1984. He was also on the Senior Staff at Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora and served as Chairman of the Department of Family Practice, and he served on the Board of Directors and as President of Crescent Counties Foundation (peer review organization).
Joseph is survived by his wife, Joan, of 65 years; son, Joseph L. Daw Jr., MD, DDS (Victoria) of Westmont, IL; daughter, Julie Ann Daw of Chicago, IL; three grandsons, Joseph III, Alexander, and Samuel Daw of Westmont; and sister-in-law, Marie (Donald) Anderson of Montgomery, IL. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and an infant daughter; his parents, Hobart Sr. and Hazel Daw; brothers, Duane, Hobart Jr., and Alan; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Daw, Elaine Daw, June Daw, Janet (Howard) Bassett, and Carol (David) Bodwell.
Private graveside services will be held for family only.
