Joseph H. Evans, 88, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Joe was born in Hertford, North Carolina but lived most of his life in Hampton Roads.

He served as a gunlaying system mechanic in the Air Force 72nd A&E Squadron from September 1954-1958. After discharging from active duty, he was a reservist from 1958-1962 and in the civil service, retiring as the F-14D Remanufacture Program Manager in August 1991.

Joe was dedicated to supporting his fellow veterans through the American Legion, serving as the Post 280 Commander from 1991-1994, 2nd Vice District Commander, and in additional roles including Athletic Officer and Judge Advocate.

He loved the Legion's baseball team and the Washington Redskins. He passionately watched the news, and there wasn't anything that he couldn't fix.

Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Dickens Evans, and parents, Grady Patrick Evans and Margie Anne Ward. He is survived by his siblings, Gail (Patty) Silva, Kay Zitnik, and William (Billy) Evans; children, Tom and Lisa Moore, Sherry and David Gibson, and Deborah Foster; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 3pm, followed by a memorial service at 3:30pm, on Wednesday, August 27th at Discover Church in Chesapeake, Virginia. Private interment will be at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
