Joseph P. Ferguson, Sr. died at his home in Alexandria, Virginia on September 11, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. He was 83 years old.
He was born on February 23, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Robert A. and Elizabeth Ferguson. He was also the brother of the late Reverend Robert A. Ferguson.
For more than 60 years, he was the devoted husband of Mary Ann (Geraghty) Ferguson, whom he married on August 21, 1965. Together they are the parents of the Reverend Thomas Ferguson, Michael Ferguson (Dena), Joseph Ferguson, Jr. (Colleen), Mary Elizabeth McNicol (William), Brian Ferguson (Vanessa), and Clare Greksouk (John). They are also the grandparents of Brendan Ferguson, Erin Ferguson, John Ferguson, Kieran Ferguson, Elizabeth Ferguson, Kathleen Ferguson, Monica McNicol, Maggie McNicol, Molly McNicol, William McNicol, Michaela McNicol, Nathan Ferguson, Veronica Ferguson, Henry Ferguson, Juliet Ferguson, Elena Ferguson, Andrew Ferguson, Victoria Greksouk, Lainey Greksouk, and Amy Greksouk. He was also a beloved brother-in-law, and Uncle Joe to nine Geraghty nieces and nephews.
Joe Ferguson graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, New York and Manhattan College, and he received master's degrees from Fordham University and New York University. He served for thirty years in the United States government in programs supporting the construction of college housing and academic facilities in the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and the Department of Education. After retiring from the government, he served at Bishop Ireton High School as Alumni Director and government teacher, and he was also very proud of the honorary diploma he received from Bishop Ireton.
A very devout Catholic, Joe Ferguson participated in parish life in his childhood at Saint Matthias Church (Ridgewood, New York), and in his adulthood at Saint Sebastian Church (Woodside, New York), and for forty-seven years at Good Shepherd Church (Alexandria, Virginia). He served the Church in many lay ministries including lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Parish Pastoral Council, and in fundraising efforts and capital campaigns.
He was proud of his public service, and more than anything else, he was wholly devoted to his faith and family. Those wishing to honor him in lieu of flowers may contribute to Good Shepherd Catholic Church (Alexandria, Virginia) and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Joseph, please visit our floral store.
