Joseph W. Mandel, 87, of Marcy passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at the Eastern Star Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Oriskany.
He was born on August 14, 1936 in Utica the son of the late Joseph W and Irene (Hurley) Mandel. He was a 1954 graduate of St. Francis DeSales Catholic High School in Utica, NY.
On June 1, 1963 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Utica he was united in marriage to Judith Allen, a blessed union of over 60 years filled with much love and mutual devotion.
He was employed with New York Telephone Co. in Utica as a Central Office Technician retiring after 38 years of dedicated service. Throughout his career he made several lifelong friendships and was well respected by all who knew him.
Mr. Mandel was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Served on the Utica Telephone Employees Credit Union (UTELFCU) Board of Directors for many years. He enjoyed playing softball in local area leagues. He bowled for over 65 years in leagues at the Pin O Rama with a few perfect 300 games. He also enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and vacationing in Siesta Key Florida. Joe led a full life centered on his love for family and sports. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan from a young age and a NY Yankees fan as well. He was very active in his children's and grandchildren's sports; coaching, little league for several years and attending many of his grandchildren's baseball, hockey, and golf events. He served as a wonderful role model for those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Judy, his children, Joseph III (Kim) Mandel, Thomas (Mary) Mandel; Michael (Jessica) Mandel and Joyce Mandel; grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Michael, Joseph IV, PJ Wozniak, Danielle Wozniak; sisters, Joan Cole, June (John) Levitas, sisters and brothers-in-law, Jacqueline Devins, Geraldine Humphrey, John (Cindy) Allen, and Jim (Pam) Allen, a goddaughter, Susan Campion as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by a sister-in-law and several brothers-in-law.
The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff at the Eastern Star Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Oriskany for the wonderful care complemented by true compassion that was given to Joe and his family during his recent stay there.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, February 1st, 2024 at 11:30 AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Whitesboro where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Durant. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc. 40 Main St. Whitesboro.
