Joseph Mustacchia III (Joey)
October 20, 1959 – October 4, 2025
Joseph Mustacchia III, lovingly known as Joey, passed away on October 4, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on October 20, 1959, in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Marie and Joseph Mustacchia Jr., Joey spent his early years in Lafayette with his four beloved sisters before the family relocated to Spring, Texas. There, he attended junior high and high school, continuing his academic journey at Louisiana State University and later earning his degree in Geology from the University of Houston.
Joey's professional life was marked by dedication and passion. He began his career analyzing earth samples in core labs and went on to serve as a geologist at several oil and gas companies. His expertise and leadership led him to Black Elk Energy, and eventually to becoming a Partner at P3 Petroleum.
Joey was a man of immense generosity and kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand. His love for geology extended beyond the workplace - he was known for pulling over to examine outcrops and hunt fossils, often sharing these adventures with his daughter Michelle in Oklahoma. His home bore the mark of his passion, with hand-placed landscaping showcasing his treasured fossils.
Joey was deeply involved in his community and gave generously of his time and energy. He served on the board of the University of Houston Natural Science & Mathematics Alumni Association, was a member of his neighborhood NFC Club board, and co-chaired a PTA golf tournament. His love for sports and family shone brightly through the years he spent coaching his daughters in softball, soccer, and basketball - always cheering them on from the sidelines and creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Joey faced his battle with lymphoma over the past 2½ years with incredible courage and determination. Through countless hospital visits and treatments, he never gave up hope and remained steadfast in his belief that he would overcome the disease. Joey's strength and resilience never wavered as he grew closer to God in the last years of his life. He was deeply grateful to the compassionate doctors, nurses, and care teams at MD Anderson and Memorial Hermann Memorial City, whose kindness and dedication meant the world to him and his family during this difficult journey.
Joey is survived by his loving wife of nearly 29 years, Patty, and their daughters Ann Mustacchia, her fiancé Justin Carlin, and Michelle Mustacchia. He is also survived by his daughter Samantha Porell and granddaughter Cordy. His legacy continues through his sisters: Cindy Vailes, her husband Donald; Lisa Mustacchia, her wife Stacey; Angie Mustacchia, her wife Ann; and Marie Mustacchia. He is also survived by his in-laws: Paul Racicot Sr., Mary Racicot, Paul Racicot Jr., his wife Lisa; and Heather Mize, her husband Jack; his nieces and nephews: Lisa Nichols, her husband Shawn; Samantha Townsend, Madison, Rachel, Joe, Holly, and Kate Racicot; Max and Sam Mize; and great-nieces and nephews: Haley, Gavin, Jacob, Miles, Paisley, and JR. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Marie Mustacchia.
