Joseph Francis Powers

Joseph Francis Powers was born on August 7, 1946 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Thelma and Freddie Powers. After moving to Natchez, Mississippi as a child he was educated in catholic school until receiving his high school diploma. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Airforce. He was the oldest of 7 children. He leaves behind 6 siblings. They are Avil Powers, Elaine Powers, Gwen Powers, James Matthews and Albert Matthews. He lost his dear brother Donald Powers in 1993.
He resided most of his adult life in Lake Charles, La. where he attended drafting school and received an associate degree from Sowela Technical College. He was employed by Olin Chemical Plant at a young age and promoted to supervisor of their nitric acid plant until retirement. He created new safety protocols and manuals while holding this position. Once retiring from Olin, later called Lyondel Chemicals he worked for the family business at King Smiles Dental in Beaumont, Tx as an insurance coordinator.
He and his wife Geneva faithfully attended St. James Baptist church in Vinton, La., under the leadership of Pastor Tillman and more recently Pastor Ernest Budwine. Joseph served as a deacon, church secretary, and sang in the men's choir.
Joseph loved God and especially reading the Bible. He loved fishing, jazz music, home improvement shows, and dancing. He was an excellent cook and could create recipes simply by sampling a restaurant menu. He was a skilled draftsman and could build and refurbish just about anything. He loved and continued to give sound advice and encouragement to his children throughout life. His hard work will forever be an example to us.
He is survived by his wife Geneva of 25 years from Winston Salem, NC, his 5 children Wondretta Croon, Sabrina McClenton, Julian Powers, Gabrella Powers, and Romanda Powers Roy. He also leaves behind two bonus children Timika Clyburn and Tia Matthews of North Carolina. He leaves 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and a host of family. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald Powers, grandson T'Darian Lawson, grand daughter Aniya Hardeman and bonus grandson Mikaele Matthews.
