Joseph Brent Smith, 73, of the Deep River Community, passed away on August 14, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Lee County on May 15, 1952, Brent was the son of the late Joseph Robert Smith and Athelene Johnson Smith. His father, Robert, passed away in an accident before Brent was born. Two years later, Athelene married Jesse Walker, the only father Brent ever knew. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Ben Davies; mother-in-law, Betty Davies; and niece, Molly Davies.

Brent is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jean Davies Smith; father, Jesse Walker; children, Stephanie Smith Pace (Todd) and Justin Brent Smith (Elizabeth); and grandchildren, Hudson Brent Smith, Camden Conrad Smith, Blair Cadence Pace, and Nash Callum Pace. He is also survived by his siblings, Susan Walker Connor (Carlton), Allyson Walker Hawley (Joe), and Mark Walker (Robin); brothers-in-law, Gary Davies (Margaret) and Jeffrey Davies; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A lifelong and active member of Flat Springs Baptist Church, Brent was part of the Faith Sunday School Class and served on the House and Grounds Committee, acting as chairman for many years.

Brent graduated from Deep River School as co-salutatorian in 1970, excelling in baseball, track, and basketball. He was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He went on to earn a degree in Business Administration from Elon College in 1974, where he was a member of the baseball team and the Kappa Psi Nu fraternity, forming friendships that lasted a lifetime.

As the owner and operator of J. Brent Smith Construction, Brent built hundreds of custom homes and businesses. A master builder and meticulous craftsman, his work spoke for itself. Over the years, he mentored many, including his children. Justin went on to run his own business, and Stephanie worked alongside her father for more than two decades.

Brent and Jean recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 2. He often said their life together was a journey he wouldn't have taken with anyone else. Brent was deeply proud of his children and grandchildren, attending countless games, performances, and events. Known as "Pops," he brought joy to every gathering. He loved family trips to the beach and was happiest on the water, especially in Sneads Ferry, where he made cherished memories fishing with loved ones.

A memorial service will be held at Flat Springs Baptist Church on Sunday, August 17th at 2:00pm. Dr. Gary McCullough and Pastor Tim Burriss will officiate. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Flat Springs Baptist Church, earmarked for the House and Grounds Fund, 4148 Deep River Road, Sanford, NC 27330.
