Joseph “Joe” Nickola Suchand, 87, of Terrytown, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025. The Lord called him home, saying it was time to put down his decoy carving tools and his fishing poles. Joe was born on May 20, 1938, in Algiers to the late George Herman Suchand, Jr. and Anna Belle Delia Sanchez Suchand. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius class of 1956 and received his BS in Industrial Engineering from LSU in 1960. He married Jacquelyn (Jackie) J. Rouprich, with whom he raised two children before they went their separate ways later in life. He is preceded in death by his former wife Jackie Suchand and his longtime sweetheart of 38 years, Hope Vignes with whom they both had a second chance to build a life full of love, respect, and countless memories. Joe is survived by his siblings George Suchand, Mary Suchand Houk, Larry Suchand and Danny Suchand, his son Christopher Suchand (Dana) and daughter Suzanne Suchand, granddaughters Ashlyn Fontana (Dominick), Tessa and Natalie DeoGracias. Joe is survived by Hope’s children Andrea, Mel (Tommy), Kathy (Marc) and Stan (fianceé Leslie), and their children and grandchildren whom he considered family with very deep affection. Joe was quite the athlete participating in numerous sports as a young man. He was a team member of the Holy Name of Mary’s junior touch football team that brought the city and state CYO titles to rest on the westbank with victories in the 1956 finals. In 1990 he ran and finished both the 25th New Orleans Mardi Gras and Long Beach, CA marathons, and in his grey-haired days, he competed in various Senior Olympic track and field events. Joe is known for his attention to detail in his hobby of duck decoy carving, where his passion centered on his coot and teal decoys, but he also enjoyed carving with intricate detail his walking sticks and a variety of local snakes carved from hand selected cypress roots and driftwood he found along the Mississippi river batture. An avid fisherman all his life, he caught an 8-pound bass while living in Florida after his LSU graduation, he enjoyed countless fishing trips on the Miss Mississippi out of Empire with his son Chris with all his secret roadside fishing spots along Hwy 1 between Leeville and Grand Isle. Joe will be greatly missed by all who knew him, whether known as Grandpa Joe or Mimi-Jeaux, His spirit and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Interim Hospice and The Peristyle at Beau West, both of Mandeville, Your compassion and the comfort you provided him over the last 9 months will be cherished. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 2:30pm. Visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s name to St. Michael’s Special School in New Orleans where his daughter Suzanne attended and graduated.
