Juan Gomez Jr.
Juan Gomez Jr (96) passed on August 7, 2023, in Las Cruces New Mexico. He was born June 24, 1927, in Mesilla Park, New Mexico to Juan Gomez and Guadalupe Najera.
Juan graduated from Las Cruces High School. He was a member of the United States Navy, Retired Army National Guard (35 years) Major (ret). He was a former City councilman and Mayor-Pro team. As a member of the council, Memorial Medical Center was Planned, funded, and built, as well as Young Park. He was also a Past Post commander of the VFW, Member of the Dona Ana County Sheriffs Posse, Member of the Elks, Moose and Eagles Clubs.
Juan was a supervisor at WSMR- under his supervision he was tasked with supplying all the army and support crew in the area from Fort Bliss to Rhoads Canyon, NM with petroleum, oil and lubricant including jet fuel (POL-Logistics) for over 30 years. Upon his retirement he opened Johnny Gomez Bail Bonds and assisted families and individuals for 35 plus years.
Of all the many work and life experiences dad had, his ultimate passion was being a horse trainer and cowboy. Dad loved everything about life from riding in parades with his buddies, Compa Joe and Jake Provencio to riding for hours on end in the mountains and sand hills around Las Cruces and Dona Ana. Dad trained 100's of horses for himself and others. Unfortunately, dad was no longer able to ride due to his age and hung his spurs some years ago. We take great solace and our pain as a family is eased by the knowledge that dad is now riding with his sons and his compa's.
Juan is survived by his children, John Santos Gomes wife Pricilla, Barbara Teresa Gomez and her children Michael, Jacob and Antoinette, Lupita Gomez husband Darrin Podruchny and children Adrian and Avery, Randy "Moose" Gomez and his children Randy Lee, Merrell and Carolina, Carolyn Lubbers and husband David and children Danielle, Eric, and Josephine, Cindy Maestas Henry and daughter Sara, Challe Talbot husband Jeff and son Shane, Marcy Holguin husband Albert and children Roman, Clestine and Ismael. He also leaves his siblings brother Efren Gomez, Sisters, Maria Cortez and Sara Sanchez.
He is preceded by his parents Juan Gomez and Guadalupe Najera, brother Augustin Gomez, sister Delfina Sanchez-Johnson, sons Jimmy R. Gomez and Joseph Dario Gomez, and granddaughter Yvette Nicole Gomez.
Services are scheduled for Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Our Lady of Purification Catholic Church 5525 Cristo Rey St, Dona Ana NM 88032 beginning at 10:00 am. (Reception to follow). Interment will be held on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 1pm, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.
