Julia Willie Rembert, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, peacefully transitioned from this life on Monday, April 14, 2025, at her home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, surrounded by her loved ones at the age of 94. Born on March 4, 1931, in Charlestown, South Carolina, Julia was the cherished daughter of the late O'Neal and Daisy Johnson. She was the fourth of five siblings and was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: O'Neal Johnson, Caroline Collier, Aleathia Anderson, and Allen Johnson.
Julia received her early education in the Charleston Public School System. A pivotal moment in her life came when she relocated to Philadelphia and married her hometown sweetheart, William Issac Rembert, on November 22, 1953. Their enduring love story blossomed in their new city.
Upon starting their life in Philadelphia, Julia and William became devoted members of the First African Baptist Church. Julia's unwavering faith and dedication to her church community was evident in her tireless service. Over the years, she served in numerous capacities, including Sunday School Teacher, Nursery Director, Youth Usher's Supervisor, Benevolent Board President, Missionary Board President, Tanner G. Duckery Memorial Club Vice President, Choir Member, Altar Guild Member, and Deaconess.
Her commitment to serving others extended beyond formal roles within the church. Julia was the heart and hands behind the church's weekly Soup Kitchen, the annual Good Friday Fish Fry, and the deeply appreciated Annual Thanksgiving Dinner, where she coordinated with the team to lovingly provide meals for community members seeking fellowship and nourishment.
Julia was also a steadfast supporter of her husband's ministries, actively assisting him in directing the annual weeklong summer camp at Camp Gibraltar, Vacation Bible School, Christmas Toy Drive and the compassionate Auto Day program, which provided transportation for nursing home residents to attend worship service and fellowship.
The congregation of First African Baptist Church became Julia's extended family, sharing in the joys and sorrows of life – celebrating births, offering comfort during illnesses and bereavements, and gathering for countless family meals, celebrations, and holidays.
Prior to dedicating herself to her growing family, Julia was a skilled seamstress. Once she and William began their family, she embraced the role of a stay-at-home mother to their three beloved daughters: Cheryl Ann, Nichole Maria, and Lynda Izetta. Julia actively participated in her children's education, volunteering at Commodore John Barry Elementary School and serving as a president of the Home and School Association for many years. In the 1970s she returned to the workforce as Barry school's first part-time food service aide when the free school lunch program was initiated, eventually becoming the Food Service Coordinator. Her work ethic and commitment to the students led her to provide nutritious meals in a safe environment until her retirement in the 1990s.
Julia was known for her genuine Southern hospitality. Anyone who entered the Rembert's home could anticipate a bountiful meal and fellowship. Her talent as a seamstress was evident in the various beautiful garments she lovingly crafted for her daughters, neighbors and friends. Coming from a family of cosmetologists, although not formally certified, Julia generously helped many women style their hair. Above all, Julia was known for her willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, whether it was providing a meal, cleaning a home, or visiting the sick.
Her life was a testament to her deep love for God, her unwavering devotion to her family, and her profound commitment to her community. In her retirement years, Julia found joy in gardening, shopping, and engaging in heartfelt conversations with her neighbors. However, the greatest highlights of her days were the precious moments spent with her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Julia's legacy of love, service, and unwavering faith will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of many years, William Issac Rembert. She is survived by her loving daughters, Cheryl Rembert Miles (Anthony), Nichole Rembert Akinwande (Fatai), and Lynda Rembert Toe; her adored grandchildren Michelle Hover (Chris), Derrick Miles (Lissa), David Miles (Janaya), Bhashyr Akinwande, Khamaal Akinwande, Lyndon Toe, and Ethan Toe; precious great-grandchildren Daphne, Miliana, Mylah, Camdyn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
