June Eileen Schoof, age 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2024 at Bickford Assisted Living in Aurora, IL. June was born on April 25, 1934 to Harold and Jeannette (Hahn) Vehslage in Lincoln, IL. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1952. June married George F. Schoof on June 30, 1957 in Lincoln, IL. After living in Romeoville, IL for ten years, they moved their family to Aurora, IL in 1969. June worked as a customer service representative at National Brush Company in Aurora for over 20 years.
June attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Aurora, where she was a member of the choir. She enjoyed the more than 40 years that she directed church choirs, and conveyed by example her joyful spirit, faith and love of music. After graduating high school, she helped start a junior choir at her home church, Zion Lutheran, in Lincoln, IL, where she served as the director for five years. June later directed cherub, junior, and senior choirs at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Romeoville, IL. After moving to Aurora, she continued to direct cherub and junior choirs at Grace Lutheran Church. June also played the piano and sang solos for many weddings, and she especially enjoyed singing for the weddings of her former choir members.
June and George enjoyed going camping most summers with their young children in a pop-up camper. They later bought an RV and traveled throughout America, camping in almost every state and staying at many national parks. They loved to take their grandchildren camping with them.
When her husband developed ALS in 1994, June was a loving and devoted caretaker to him until his death in 1999. With the help of her family, June continued to take camping trips in the RV, and made many wonderful memories with her children and grandchildren. June's grandchildren were the light of her life and she never missed a chance to spoil them.
June will be deeply missed by her four children – Debbie (Rick) Johnson of Carthage, IL, Greg (Vicki) Schoof of Bristol, IL, Randy (Irene) Schoof of Aurora, IL, and David (Karen) Schoof of Glasgow, KY and five grandchildren – Carrie Johnson of Denmark, IA, Kristina (Craig) Corzatt of Quincy, IL, Nathan Schoof of Nashville, TN, Kara (Alex) Rodriguez of Naperville, IL and Savanna Schoof of Minneapolis, MN, and four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George in 1999, her brother, Warren Vehslage, and one grandson, Kyle Johnson.
A visitation with the family will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024 from 5 PM to 8 PM at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 27 S. Edgelawn Dr., Aurora, IL 60506. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 6, at 11 am at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, preceded by a viewing at 10 am. Burial will follow the funeral service at Sugar Grove Cemetery in Sugar Grove, IL.
