Karen Virginia Honens (née Fiscus), 61, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024 at home with her husband of nearly 36 years, Robert L. Honens, by her side.
Born in 1962, Karen's early childhood was spent in Manhattan Beach, California. She graduated from East Lyme High School in Connecticut in 1980 and received her RN degree from Lasell Junior College and her Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University. Prior to moving to Cape Cod, she resided with her family in Sudbury, Mass.
Karen loved and was proud to be a nurse at The Brigham and Women's Hospital where she was affectionately called Pollyanna by her close-knit group of friends and colleagues. Her nursing career started in the Burn and Trauma ICU, then for several decades she worked in Labor and Delivery, and most recently she was in the day surgery unit at Foxboro Surgery. Never one to shy away from speaking her mind, Karen was an advocate for others, especially her patients, children and friends.
Always in motion, Karen especially enjoyed being outside in the sun whether it was gardening, beaching, paddleboarding or walking for miles. Those who she asked to join her on a walk, were often wary of the distance, as a "short" walk for Karen often meant 5 miles or more. An avid vacationer, Karen was happiest when traveling with her family and friends. She was thrilled to provide her children with the opportunity to see the world, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, UK and more. Just this past December Karen and her family spent the holidays in Aruba.
In addition to her husband, Rob, she leaves behind her sons Alex, Ryan (Ryan's wife Sydney) and her daughter Marissa, her father, Ron Fiscus, and her siblings Diane (Rob) Beaulieu and Dean (Sue) Fiscus, and her in-laws Judy Honens, Joy (Kevin) Lodeen, and Paul Honens, as well as her nieces Holly Fiscus (fiancé Tom), Kaley Lodeen, Allie (P.J.) Zipser, and her nephew Jake (Natalie) Lodeen. She was predeceased by her mom, Barbara (Fitch) Fiscus, and father-in-law Laurie Honens.
Karen's "family" included many friends and extended family members whom she absolutely cherished that are too many to list here.
Karen was a strong, beautiful and independent woman. Though her earthly candle has been extinguished, her memory shines brightly in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved her.
Karen requested that any memorial services be private. A celebration of her life with friends will be held on October 6th at The Tirrell Room, 254 Quarry Street, Quincy, MA from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, for those so inclined, donations are welcome to be made to the MNA in honor of Karen honens @ https://www.massnurses.org/mnf/donations-in-honor-or-in-memory-of/.
