On February 13, 2024, Karl DeAngelo Baynes, born on January 11th, 1979, in Norfolk, Virginia, peacefully transitioned from life at his home in Maryland. Karl's educational journey began at Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach, VA, where he earned his diploma. He continued his academic pursuits at East Carolina University (ECU), graduating with two Bachelors and joining the esteemed fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. It was during his time at ECU that Karl discovered his passion for the transportation industry. Before attending his first class, he impressed the Director of Transportation, securing a position, obtaining his Class A licenses, and mastering the art of
driving "Big Blue." His exceptional skills as a bus driver were evident when he clinched the top spot in the "School Bus Rodeo" during his inaugural year in the transportation sector.
Karl returned to the Hampton Roads Area, initially taking a corporate position but eventually shifting to work for Gallop Bus Line. There, he honed his expertise as a Professional Motor Coach driver. He ultimately left Gallop Bus Line to drive entertainment coaches for notable personalities like White Stripes, 5 Finger Death Punch, TechN9ne, Keith Sweat, Young Jeezy, Insane Clown Posse, Leaves Eyes,and other high-profile clients.
In 2007, Karl relocated to Washington DC, assuming the role of Operations Manager with DC Trails. Under the mentorship of William and Lillian Torres, who treated him like family, Karl had the freedom to implement policies and procedures, refining his skills in transportation and logistics.
Seeking new challenges, Karl accepted the position of General Manager - Capital Region with Academy Bus. In this role, he oversaw operations in the Washington, DC "Capital Region" market, demonstrating proficiency in sales, administration, net profit, and property management in Northern Virginia & Maryland. His responsibilities also included terminal budgeting, personnel management, and scheduling. After contributing significantly to the motor coach industry, Karl shifted gears to work for the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) as the Curbside Manager. His innovative approaches gained international recognition, especially for the 2018 All-star game procedures and the coordination of the 58th Presidential Inauguration. Because of his logistical expertise, when at DDOT. Karl would often be assigned to command center during significate events or parades in the DC. Karl's diverse career path continued with roles at OSSE (Office of the State Superintendent of Education) as STMS (Supervisor Terminal Manager Specialis) and most recently, Karl had secured a position as Manager with the Metropolitan Police Department over the Evidence Control Division.
Due to his expertise, Karl was entrusted with coordinating motor coaches for the Golden State Warriors' Championship parade in San Francisco. He played a crucial role in the transportation arm of the Safeforce Dreamforce Annual Conference in San Francisco, attended by over two-hundred thousand people.
Karl was actively involved with organizations such as the Council of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, and the Center for Advanced Transportation Mobility.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Mary Pope, paternal grandparents, Thomas and Sara Baynes, and uncle, Bobby Lincoln. Karl leaves behind cherished memories for his parents, Timothy and Sandra Baynes of Chesapeake, VA;
brother, Lamont Baynes of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Jessica Baynes of Chesapeake, VA; nephew, Kobe Baynes of Jacksonville, FL; nieces, Angela Baynes of Norfolk, VA, and Sarai Baynes of Jacksonville, FL; great-nephew, great-niece; aunts, uncles, cousins, along with a host of relatives and friends.

To the family of my friend and co-worker DeAngelo Baynes, please allow me to express my sincere condolences in the death of your son and brother. I was truly stunned when I received the news. My most vivid memory of DeAngelo was his unbridled passion to ensure our plans and response to both of President Obama's inaugurals went off without a hitch. We worked late into the night calling and texting various members of the team as well as meeting with Secret Service. Always with a joke and a smile. I shall miss him, we sometimes spoke over LinkedIn after my retirement. Rest in Power my friend.

Sincerely,

Wanda Ellis
