St. Albans, VT - Katherine J. Mawn, a longtime Woburn resident and communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in East Woburn and St. Mary's in Winchester, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Maples Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wrentham, Massachusetts.
Born in Sutton Junction, Quebec, on February 18, 1937, she was the daughter of the late George Waister and Thelma Heidi (Royea) King. Katherine was 87.
Katherine was educated in Quebec in a one room schoolhouse for two years and spent the remaining nine years of her primary education in her local school system. Upon graduating from the Cowansville, Quebec High School, Katherine began working as a bank teller for the Bank of Canada; she retired in 1996 from Bank of America.
Katherine married Andrew James Mawn Jr. on May 21, 1960, in St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Albans. They settled in Montreal, Quebec, beginning their lives together and new careers. Katherine with the Bank of Montreal and Andrew with Eastern Airlines as an aircraft mechanic.
Andrew and Katherine moved from Montreal to Woburn MA. in 1967, when Andrew transferred within Eastern Airlines to Boston. Over the decades living on Pine Street in Woburn, Katherine along with Andrew and their son Andrew the 3rd, transformed their house into a home, and then cultivated their home into a haven where everyone was warmly welcomed. Katherine, also known as "Kitty," in her neighborhood, was outgoing and outspoken which quickly turned neighbors into friends and friends into family. Katherine was beloved for her quick-wit and sharp-tongue which made Pine Street a favorite destination spot for everyone lucky enough to have known her. Katherine and Andrew were happily married for 59 years! Andrew passed away in 2019.
Katherine is survived by her son, Andrew James Mawn III, his wife, Lisa (Santoro) Mawn of Medway, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Matthew Reynold Mawn and Rachel Olivia Mawn, as well as her sisters, Edna Chagnon and Georgiana Côté; sisters-in-law, Frances Virginia Howrigan, Patricia Ann Heimberger, Sister Rita Elaine Mawn and Kathleen Lorreta Tabor and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, Andrew, Katherine was predeceased by her infant son Michael, her sisters, Shirley Snay and Betty Coleman; brothers, Claude King and Donald King; in-laws, W. Robert Howrigan, Mary (Betty) Mercure and her husband Edward Mercure, John Heimberger, Sidney Tabor, and Robert Chagnon.

Katherine's family will receive family and friends on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Nativity, 65 Canada Street, Swanton, with The Reverend Father James Dodson as celebrant. Prayers of Committal and interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
