Kathrine Lee (Gorman) Schwer, lovingly known as Kathey or “Mouse,” passed away on January 24, 2026, at the age of 74. She was born on May 30, 1951, in Oakland, California.

Kathey was married to Richard Schwer for 51 years. She was a devoted mother to Julie Steen (45) and Jeffrey Schwer (40), and a deeply proud grandmother to Emma and Isaiah, who were the light of her life. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Kevin.

She is survived by her sister Micki Estrada and her husband Brad Estrada, her brother Patrick Gorman and his wife Stephanie Gorman, and her beloved nieces and nephews: Chris, Josh, Matt, Nick, Lacey, Lacie, Tracie Estrada, Shane, and Casey Gorman. Kathey is also lovingly remembered by a large and cherished extended family on her husband’s side, including many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. all of whom held a special place in her heart.

Family and friends were everything to Kathey. She was outgoing, friendly, and instantly made people feel welcome. She was known for feeding people, throwing unforgettable parties, telling jokes, her great laugh, and her signature crooked smile. She was always quick to help others and was truly the life of the party.

One of her greatest accomplishments was her work with disabled students, which she held close to her heart. She worked as an assistant to the Coordinator at Chabot College, where she made a lasting impact and received an award recognizing her dedication and service to disabled students.

Kathey grew up in Berkeley and Fremont. Becoming the First Miss Fremont. And, as part of the First Graduating Class of John F. Kennedy High School in 1969, where she was on the spirit squad. She later attended Ohlone College and served as a Campfire leader for two years. Throughout her youth, she worked every summer at Pine Grove Resort on Cobb Mountain cleaning cabins and working in the snack bar at the pool and the coffee shop, a place that remained deeply meaningful to her throughout her life.

Pine Grove Resort was her happy place—where days were spent swimming, playing cards, and playing trivial suit and Evenings were filled with lots of laughter, bingo, square dancing, and games. She also could never wait for the End of year Talent Show where Kathey and her sister became the Original Cobbettes putting on a great show for everyone to enjoy. It was where lifelong friendships were formed and where her love of community truly flourished.

Kathey loved road trips and adventures, especially those shared with her brother and sister, as well as spontaneous “getting lost” journeys that sometimes lasted a day and sometimes several. She embraced the joy of the journey as much as the destination.

Her many passions included going to tea, collecting antiques and Irish china, garage sales, bargain hunting, decorating, and gifting.

She adored animals and leaves behind her beloved dog Lady, her grand-pups Riley and Filly.

Kathey loved the holidays, especially Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day, and her legendary St. Patrick’s Day parties were known by all—Epic, All-day celebrations where everyone was welcome. She loved feeding people, hosting gatherings with her best friend Shari, and creating spaces where laughter and connection thrived.

Kathey lived a full and vibrant life and cherished her grandchildren above all else. She will be remembered for her charisma, generosity, warmth, and her remarkable ability to bring people together.

Services will be held at East Lawn Mortuary & Sierra Hills Memorial Park on Thursday, February 5, 2026, with a viewing beginning at 10:00 AM and the funeral service at 11:00 AM. A gathering with light refreshments will follow at her home.
