Kathleen “Kat” Cook Winfree, a beloved member of her community and cherished matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at Liberty Commons, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 24, 1928, in Guilford County, to the late Rufus Lawrence Cook and Bessie Lola Murray Cook, and was the wife to the late Aljean Wesley Winfree.
As a retired daycare preschool teacher, Kathleen dedicated her life to nurturing the hearts and minds of countless children, always bringing her boundless energy and warmth to their lives. Throughout her many years of service, she never met a stranger, spreading joy and kindness wherever she went. Kathleen touched the lives of many through her vibrant personality and unwavering love for God and family. Her commitment to her faith was steadfast; she was a devoted member of Peace Lutheran Church for over fifty years serving on numerous committees, before moving her membership to the Gathering, where her contributions and cheerful spirit were deeply appreciated.
Kathleen had a zest for life that was infectious. She loved to dance and enjoyed spending her cherished Saturday nights at the Barn Dance, creating beautiful memories and friendships on the dance floor. Her laughter and spirit became the cornerstone of her family's treasured "Sisters and Cinderellas Adventures" as she traveled to the beach and embarked on day trips with her daughter, her sisters, and their daughters, making every outing an unforgettable experience.
Kathleen was an extraordinary mother to her daughter, Kathy and together they shared an inseparable bond of friendship. Their connection was profound, with every moment spent together being a testament to their deep love for one another. Kathleen's devotion extended to her grandchildren, whom she adored and actively supported, never missing a single activity they were involved in.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Kathy Winfree Stanley and her husband Mike; her loving grandchildren, Heidi Smith, Joshua Smith and his wife Amanda, Michael Stanley and his wife Mary, and Joshua Stanley and his wife Allison; and her great-grandchildren, Mason Martin, Tucker Smith, Natalie Stanley, Noah Stanley, Archie Stanley, Benjamin Stanley, and one on the way, who will undoubtedly carry forward Kathleen's legacy of love and joy. Kathleen is also survived by her loving sisters that she adored, Alene Cook Clemmons and Charlene Cook Summers and her husband L.D; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were fortunate enough to share in her remarkable journey.
Kathleen has now been reunited by her beloved husband of 36 years, Aljean Wesley Winfree, who passed away in 1983; her parents, Rufus and Bessie Murray Cook; a brother, Robert Lee Cook; sister-in-law, Dula Mae Cook; a brother-in-law, Homer "Peanut" Clemmons; a niece, Sandy Byrd; and her special companion, John Shepherd, all of whom she held dear.
While Kathleen's physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever ripple through the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. In the many cherished memories she created, Kathleen’s joyful laughter, compassionate heart, and indomitable spirit will remain a guiding light for generations to come.
The funeral service to celebrate the life of Kathleen will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Shields with the burial to follow at Peace Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 PM prior to the service and other times at the daughter’s home.
