Kathryn Louise Dungan, a beloved mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Born on October 12, 1955, in Leavenworth, Kansas, Kathryn’s life was marked by her deep commitment to family and her distinguished career of 35 years as a civil servant with the U.S. Army, from which she retired. Kathryn called Leavenworth home for much of her life, only relocating in 2023 to Long Beach, Mississippi, to be closer to her sister, Marcia Kruse. This move allowed Kathryn to foster even stronger familial bonds and create new memories while remaining a central figure in her family’s life.
Kathryn was particularly known for her joyful spirit and her love for adventure. She had a passion for traveling, and her journeys took her to many states, including memorable trips to Hawaii and Colorado, as well as explorations across Europe. An avid reader, she found joy in books, often losing herself in stories that transported her to far-off places.
One of her greatest joys was being a grandmother. Kathryn loved her grandchildren—Adrianna (Noah), Bradley (Juli-Anna),Theron, Wyatt (Nevaeh), and Kolton—and looked forward to welcoming her first great-grandchild, Kaleesia. Her affection for them was boundless, and she treasured every moment spent with them.Kathryn leaves behind her daughters, Rhiannon Matthews and Erin Dyson, both of Leavenworth, Kansas, who carry on her legacy of love and resilience. She is also survived by her sister Marcia, who shared an unbreakable bond with Kathryn throughout their lives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Dungan, as well as her parents, Warren and Margaret Kruse. They, along with her unwavering spirit, will be honored and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
No services are planned at this time. Riemann Family Funeral Home, Long Beach is assisting the family.
