Kay Arlene Poe, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at 3:20 a.m. Friday January 10, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on August 26, 1936, in Boone Grove, Indiana, she was the beloved daughter of Lester and Gladys Greenlee Ludington.
Mrs. Poe dedicated her life to nurturing young minds as a teacher within the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation from which she retired in 1995. Her passion for education was matched only by her commitment to her faith as a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
Kay was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed time with her family above all else. Friendships made and kept throughout her lifetime were vitally important to her as well. Having grown up on a farm in southwest Porter County, tending to plants and cultivating flowers was her passion. She served the Columbus area through her sorority (Psi Iota Xi) and volunteering at Columbus Regional Hospital. Kay enjoyed traveling the world with her husband visiting the Canadian Rockies, Europe, Australia, Central and South America as well as many sights within the United States.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and education, survived by her husband, Norman J. Poe; her son, Gregory (Lynne) Poe of Greenwood; grandchildren, Sam, Michelle, and Brett Poe; and a daughter-in-law, Kristin Poe of Greenwood. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her son Michael Poe, and her brother Lyle Ludington. Her memory will be treasured and kept alive through the countless lives she touched.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street, with the Pastor Nick Robinson officiating from Asbury United Methodist Church.
Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. to time of service at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Hospice House.
Condolences and special memories may be shared with the family and a video tribute may be viewed at barkesweaverglick.com
