Kenneth Lyle Byrd (Kenny), 64, of Tolleson, Arizona passed away on February 24, 2025. Kenny was the sixth child born to Mellie and Willie Byrd (both deceased) on September 13, 1960. Kenny was a former resident of Toledo, Ohio and a 1979 graduate of Jesup W. Scott High School. "Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog."
Prior to his death, Kenny was employed at Great Eagle Golf Course as a chef for 15 years in Surprise, Arizona. Kenneth "Kenny" Byrd was a standout basketball player at Scott High School where his exceptional skills made him a legend in Toledo basketball history. A dynamic and versatile guard, Kenny had the rare ability to do everything on the floor, dazzling crowds with his elite passing, smooth scoring touch, and high basketball IQ. His electrifying play and leadership culminated in winning the 1978-1979 City League Player Of The Year Award.
After his stellar high school career, Kenny continued his basketball career at Jackson Community College and Southern Illinois University where he earned his degree in Corrections. At SIU, he earned MVP honors for his outstanding play. Kenny's legacy as one of the finest players to come out of Toledo and Scott High School remains intact to inspiring future generations.
Kenny was preceded in death by both parents Mellie and Willie Byrd. Both maternal and paternal grandparents Nezzie and John Jernigan and Gus and Savannah Byrd. Siblings Myrna Huff, Vanessa Byrd, Tucker Georgette Blackwell, Lynette Perrin, and brother Bernard Byrd and daughter Capreese Warren. Mother in Law, Bernadine Anderson.
Kenny is survived by his spouse of 25 years, Mrs. Synthia Byrd. Daughter; Laura Sanford of Illinois, Son; Kenneth Byrd Jr., Grandchildren; La Marrie, Kenneth L. Byrd II, Joel and Faith. Sisters; Willie Ann Byrd, Beverly Byrd, Brothers; LaDonald Byrd Sr., Ardis Byrd of North Carolina. Aunt; Mrs.Goletha Gordon, Special friends; "Pie" Walker, Derrick Reese, Lewis "Bud" Pollenitz, Tony Lipkins, Wayne Radford and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, In-laws and friends.
