Kenneth "Ken" R. VanRiper
Harrison, Michigan
Kenneth Roy VanRiper, known affectionately as Ken to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, at Gladwin Pines, surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. Born on December 9, 1936, in Gaines, Michigan, Kenneth was the cherished son of the late Roy and Treva (Dunlap) VanRiper. His life was a testament to the power of love, hard work, and dedication to family.
In 1956, Kenny married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Burgess, and together they built a life filled with love and laughter until her passing in 2021. Their union was blessed with three children: Jill (David) Richley, Jack (Janet) VanRiper, and Susan VanRiper. Ken was a proud grandfather to Joshua (Mao) Richley, Cory Richley, Jonathan (Jessica) Richley, and Jordon (Robert) Utica, and he delighted in the joys of being a great-grandfather to Navin, Isabel, and Kenneth Richley.
Kenny's sisters, Kathleen June, Barbara Sexton, and Marilyn (Mike) Patterson, along with many nieces and nephews, will fondly remember his warm presence. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and his brothers-in-law, Mike Sexton and Gary June.
Ken's professional life was marked by nearly five decades of dedicated service at Glasers Lumber in Vernon, Michigan. Upon retirement, he and Patricia moved to Elbow Lake, where they built their final home. Ken became the beloved handyman of the lake community, always ready to lend a hand with neighbors' needs and home maintenance through the changing seasons.
Those who knew Kenny will remember him for his creative spirit and kind heart. He was a master of woodworking, crafting beautiful pieces for family and friends. His friendly demeanor made him a favorite among the nurses at the Pines, where he was known for his playful jokes and flirtatious banter. Ken's love for family gatherings was unmatched, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.
As we bid farewell to Kenneth Roy VanRiper, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of moments that will continue to inspire and comfort us. Kenny's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his enduring warmth and grace.

He would always have some silly joke to say about something when he would come up to you when he noticed you looking at something. He would say, "You know why ________is like that, because_______." It would always be something of a chuckler that only he would say.
