Kenneth "Ken" Earl Wilson, a gifted musician, devoted educator, and cherished friend, passed away on December 21, 2024, at the age of 71 in Edmonds, Washington. He leaves behind a legacy of music, mentorship, and kindness that will resonate for generations. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Leslie Wilson; nieces Amanda Wilson Kapelka and Allison Wilson Vaughn; nephew Adam Wilson; and his former spouse of 17 years, Christine (Wilson) Sexton, along with her children and grandchildren.
Born in West Seattle on October 8, 1953, Ken's love for music was sparked by his mother's singing and solidified when he picked up the trumpet in sixth grade. His passion led him to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees in Music Education from Western and Eastern Washington State Colleges, respectively. Over the course of 50 years, he inspired countless students with his enthusiasm, humor, and deep love for the craft.
Ken's teaching career flourished at Vashon Island's Middle and High Schools, Bothell High School, and Bellevue College, where he chaired the music department and directed the classical choir and vocal jazz ensemble, Celebration. His leadership extended to Seattle's All-City Band and Choir of the Sound, helping shape dynamic performances that blended classical, jazz, and popular music. In 2003, he co-founded Blue Street Voices, infusing it with his signature sound and passion. His influence even extended to sports-his adaptation of Salute to the Olympians became the Seattle Sounders' fight song.
Beyond music, Ken found peace in nature. He was an Eagle Scout, a passionate sailor, and a trusted teacher on the water. For over 25 years, he navigated the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, and Canadian Gulf Islands, sharing his love of sailing with friends and students alike.
Ken's warmth, generosity, and humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Whether conducting a choir or piloting a sailboat, he led with grace and adventure. His spirit lives on in the music he made and the lives he touched.

Mr. Wilson was my beloved band teacher at Vashon elementary when l began my long learning in band learning to play trumpet. He surprised me one Monday morning when the other band players in Alice Nordlings 6th grade class were being escorted to the music room, I was surprised when my trumpet was taken away and was given a new mouthpiece to an instrument l had no idea what it was. That was my first day of learning to play Tuba. He was as a great, passionate and caring teacher and director. I was a student of his from 1975 until 1982 when he went to pursue his choral education in Italy and l last saw him in 1982 at a concert in which he was directing a jazz choir he had started at EWU. He will be missed.

Being part of the Bothell High school choirs, under Ken´s direction was very helpful to my development as a musician and leader. The family feel that was created through the retreats and high level rehearsals and music made choir my favorite class. He was a master at teaching improvisation. I really enjoyed being part of the vocal jazz group. Was glad to reconnect briefly many years ago when he was directing blue street voices.

Thank you to my wonderful McMurray Middle School choir teacher. You made me feel a part of the Vashon community and gave me a new appreciation for musicality. Rest in Peace.

Mr. Wilson was my music teacher on Vashon Island. He was passionate in his teaching. I often wondered where life took him after Vashon. I feel fortunate to have been one of his students.
Very sorry for his family and friends loss.
