Kent Cook Obituary

Published by Legacy from Jun. 23 to Jun. 24, 2025.
Kent Steven Cook, 73, of Cresco, formerly of Waverly, Iowa, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, with his beloved wife Ann by his side.

Kent was born on February 27, 1952, in Osage, Iowa, the cherished son of Henry and Margaret (Stevenson) Cook. He was also lovingly raised by his stepfather, Fred Pierce, from whom he inherited a lifelong love of cars-a passion that stayed with him throughout his life.

Kent attended Elma Public School and graduated from Crestwood High School in 1970. He earned his degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974 and began a long and dedicated career at Waverly Publishing, later known as Colorfx. Known for his strong work ethic and quiet reliability, Kent retired in 2014 after forty years of loyal service.

Kent married Karolyn Bensend in 1974. They later divorced. In 1996, he married Terri Sue Potts, who sadly preceded him in death in 1997. On October 6, 2012, Kent found lasting love again with Ann Sullivan. Their marriage was filled with laughter, companionship and deep mutual respect.

An avid sports fan, Kent especially loved cheering on the Chicago Cubs and the UNI Panthers. During his younger years he also shared his passion for sports by coaching Waverly Little League, helping to nurture and inspire young athletes in his community.

Kent and Ann enjoyed traveling together, creating cherished memories on trips to Washington, D.C., Alaska, an East Coast cruise, and their annual winter excursions to Orange Beach, Alabama. These adventures brought them closer and added joy to their lives.

Kent was preceded in death by his parents; half-brothers Reed, Roger and Ralph Cook; and his second wife Terri.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Sullivan; stepdaughters Alison (Brad) Holten and Amy (Brent) Leistikow; step-grandchildren Kaiya and Kaden Holten and Cael and Carsyn Leistikow; sisters Jean Fountain and Linda Sass; nieces Angela (Tony) Aldridge and Alicia (Mike) Armstrong; great-nephews Maddox and Alex; great-niece Toni; and a loving circle of extended family and friends.

Kent will be remembered not only for his gentle spirit and steady presence but also for his meticulous care of the things he loved. A true car enthusiast, Kent took great pride in his vehicles-there was never a speck of dust on any car in his garage. His attention to detail and quiet appreciation for life's simple joys were a reflection of his character.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Howard County Cancer Association (HOCA) or Howard County Community Hospice.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Schmelzer (formerly known as Lindstrom) Funeral Home in Cresco with Pastor Melissa Warren officiating. Visitation will begin on Saturday morning at 9:30am until the time of services. Burial will take place at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa.
