Richard “Dick” Makin, 82, passed away at 6:53 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Mercy Health St. Rita’s, surrounded by his loving family and best friend Bud.

Dick was born on March 6, 1943, in Lima, Ohio, to the late Lloyd Monroe Makin and Alice Elizabeth (Phalen) Makin. On October 14, 1961, he married his beloved Joyce Kay (Dumm) Makin, who preceded him in death on July 11, 2024.

Dick was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church. He retired from General Dynamics where he was a crane operator. He collected eagle statues and model trains, and loved vacationing in Gatlinburg, TN and Branson, MO. He loved his 4 cats, Charlie, Gabby, Fluffy, and O.J.

He is survived by his daughters: Tammy (Ken) Peer, Jackie Bice, both of Lima, and Paula (Rob) Hillard of Sarasota, FL; son, Ric (April) Makin of Lima; thirteen grandchildren: Ricky Miner, Carrie Miner, Megan Miner, Brad Dietrich Jr., Aaron Dietrich, Michael Strahm, Robbie Hillard, Jacob Hillard, Alexis Makin, Kylee Makin, R.J. Makin, Hailey Makin and Braylon Makin; fifteen great-grandchildren; brother, David Makin; and his best friend, Bud King, who was always like a brother to him.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Makin.

A Memorial Mass will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father John McLoughlin will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
